The Society were first advantaged in the mid-1960s by having as a member Herbert Reeves (known to all his friends as "Bert") . Although he never aspired to a UK transmitting licence he did obtain a licence during the time he lived in the USA. His great interest in radio was RADIO and not communications. It was said (and often proved) that he could walk into a room which had a television receiver switched on, continue his conversation with you and then, more or less as an aside, say "You know what's wrong with that!!" (indicating the defaulting tv). And he would proceed to repair it!
He gave the first of his lectures to the Society on 16th May 1968 and thus started an as yet unbroken record of "highest attendance" talks. He covered radio, television, hi-fi and his beloved photography in an inimitable and popular style.
Sadly his health problems now prevent him from lecturing or indeed carrying out practical radio and, following a not-too-successful heart operation he is invalided and lives alone at Cheltenham and is intent on continuing black and white photography and processing to the full.
